Steve Jobs acknowledges MobileMe disaster

Following the incredibly unsuccessful (and frustrating) MobileMe launch, Steve Jobs sent out an internal memo to Apple employees admitting that launching the new product at the same time as the iPhone 3G and iPhone 2.0 software was a mistake. Obviously the fervor around the new iPhone and it’s software was enough to keep everyone busy for several weeks (if not months), but they decided to push out MobileMe for the “Apple Trifecta” and have had some very negative press and probably lost a fair number of users. Steve Jobs wrote:

It was a mistake to launch MobileMe at the same time as iPhone 3G, iPhone 2.0 software and the App Store,” he says. “We all had more than enough to do, and MobileMe could have been delayed without consequence.

Apple has taken further actions to assure that the MobileMe movement from here on out goes as smoothly as possible. Jobs has reorganized his management team and has put Eddy Cue, Apple’s Vice President of iTunes in charge. Jobs went on to say:

The MobileMe launch clearly demonstrates that we have more to learn about Internet services,” Jobs says. “And learn we will. The vision of MobileMe is both exciting and ambitious, and we will press on to make it a service we are all proud of by the end of this year.

I had high hopes of this service being better than dot mac, as I always thought dot mac was overpriced for what they actually offered. But with the laundry list of things wrong with the MobileMe, there’s no way I’ll move over to this service any time soon.
