Apple seeds iPhone 2.1 firmware with GPS

One of the most impressive features of the new iPhone 3G is the GPS functionality built right in. And with Apple recently seeding the beta version of the iPhone 2.1 firmware, turn-by-turn GPS could be “right around the corner” (pardon the terrible pun). According to Apple, the new beta firmware is reportedly shipping with updated Core Location features that can track the direction and speed at which you’re traveling. Bingo!

Whether it comes natively from Apple or if a 3rd party developer jumps on the GPS band wagon, it’s our hope that soon we’ll be able to ditch our TomToms and use the iPhone for all of our travel needs.
