Apple sells 1 million iPhones in first weekend

Apple Store, 5th Ave., NYC, 7/12/08 - 13 of 19

Well, it’s official. After an incredibly stressful weekend, Apple announced today that they sold their one millionth iPhone 3G on Sunday afternoon. Despite the problems with long lines and activation, it took Apple only three days to reach the million mark. Pretty incredible considering all of the negative press the iPhone buying experience has garnered over the past few days. In a press release, Steve Jobs was quick to point out that Apple achieved in three days what it took 74 days to accomplish last year. It seems that Apple might just be able to give their goal of 10 million iPhones sold in 2008 a run for the money.

In addition to incredible phone sales, the App Store has been a resounding hit. Over 10 million apps have been downloaded to the iPhone and iPod Touch as the store continues to churn out quality apps for the platform. “The App Store is a grand slam, with a staggering 10 million applications downloaded in just three days,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Developers have created some extraordinary applications, and the App Store can wirelessly deliver them to every iPhone and iPod touch user instantly.”
