iPhone SDK arriving earlier than expected?

In October, Apple said that they would have an “iPhone SDK in developers’ hands in February”. It looks like they might be making good on that promise a little earlier than expected. According to Electronista, some developers have already received Apple’s SDK’s for the iPhone and iPod touch. The kit has been likened to Google’s OpenSocial software and it has been confirmed that native programs can be built and run on each operating system.

Electronista reports, “Although treated as a welcome development, the SDK will not be the same as writing a Mac OS X application and has its clear limits, people familiar with the matter say. These details are unavailable, though the features are broad enough that at least one major social networking site is reportedly interested what the native platform can offer versus existing web code.”

Let’s hope that this news means we’ll be seeing some great, native 3rd party apps a lot sooner than we expected.
