Apple Faces A New Class-Action Lawsuit

Apple Inc. is facing yet another class action lawsuit, this time from by two private citizens who are seeking forms of relief and reimbursement for sub-par displays only capable of 6 bits per channel rather than 8 bits per channel on their MacBook and MacBook Pro.

In the May 3rd filing with the Superior Court of California for the County of San Diego, the owners claim that the MacBook and MacBook Pro’s are only capable of displaying the “illusion of millions of colors through the use of a software technique referred to as ‘dithering’, which causes nearby pixels on the display to use slightly varying shades of colors that trick the human eye into perceiving the desired color even though it is not truly that color.”

The filing also states that within weeks of purchase, customers reported to Apple that their MacBook and MacBook Pro displays were “grainy or sparkly”. Of the 22-page suit, 6 pages are of complaints from other customers on Apple’s discussion forums, in addition to AppleInsider and MacNN forums. The two private citizens are also claiming that Apple was aware of the problem since they “took down” entire threads on their website devoted to the subject, thus charging Apple with violating the Consumer Legal Remedies Act because they failed to address and rectify the situation.

The matter is of great concern to MacBook and MacBook Pro users who rely on the accuracy of the displays for graphic use, such as photography and web design.
