According to MacNN, Michigan Democrats are proposing a new bill that provides every child in the state with an iPod or some other mp3 player to help them learn, which has become a trend in many colleges and universities, such as Duke University, for class podcasts.
The bill has already created controversy in the state for the 38 million dollar price tag it will cost to provide for the iPods, when the state of Michigan already faces a 600 million dollar deficit this year. Republicans have already spoken out in the Detroit News by stating that Democrats are wasting money and putting greater strain on tax payers wallets since they will ultimately provide the funds for the bill.
When asked to comment on the issue, Don Wotruba, the spokesman for Michigan Association of School Boards, said, “My members are telling me they have much more pressing things they’re worried about.”
Democrats would like to have the bill signed by June 1st to be included in the fiscal year that begins in October.
