Take note: Just because an ‘i’ is placed in front of other words does not mean that it is something that is going to be produced by Apple. For instance, last week Macalicious reported that an announcement was going to be made by Apple regarding the iPhone today (Monday, December 18).
While there was a announcement about the creation of the iPhone, it has nothing to do with Apple. In fact, Cisco revealed today that they will be selling Web-enabled cell phones that are compatible with Voice over IP (VOIP). The various models range from about $79.99 to $369.99.
Part of the confusion about Apple’s involvement in the whole iPhone ordeal is probably because Apple owns the iPhone.org domain name and has tried to file for the same trademark overseas. Unfortunately for Apple, Cisco has owned the U.S. trademark “iPhone†for the last 10 years and will obviously use it.
Personally, I agree with speculation from Doug Berger of Gadgetell that Apple, in conjunction with Google (since Google CEO Eric Schmidt is on the Board at Apple), need to spawn their own cell phone. “Think about it… an Apple iPod phone, with Mac OSX lite, a few Google apps pre-loaded, YouTube integration, and Google as the default homepage, of course. The ULTIMATE content phone, wouldn’t you say?”, said Berger. And it seems he’s not the only one that thinks a Google/Apple phone would be a marriage made in tech heaven.
